1. Sleep. Get it when you can, it’s now a precious commodity. If baby takes a nap, you can too. Ignore those emails, leave the hoovering. Make sleep your top priority.

2. Coffee. When you can’t do point 1, drink coffee! Latte, cappuccino, americano, what ever takes your fancy, at your favourite coffee shop! It’s your friend and goes very well with cake.

3. Cake. You deserve it! Goes well with coffee, and great to share with other Mummies.

4. Chocolate. Similar reasons to points 2 and 3.

5. Online Shopping. If you don’t already do this, get an account for your supermarket (and your favourite shops!) and get started. You can check out gift cards and vouchers too. Save yourself a job and get the shopping delivered to the door. Make sure you get some treats too, you deserve some new shoes now your ankles aren’t the size of elephants!

6. Cleaning Wipes. For the kitchen, the bathroom, and any other surfaces that may require some domestic attention. Quick, easy, and disposable. Makes life a little bit easier! On the days you need to be a bit more thorough, you may want to use products that are multiuse within the home to cut down on time, this could be using such things as distilled water for cleaning glass, floors, countertops, etc. to kill viruses to keep your little family safe, for example.

7. TV. Line up those series you’ve always wanted to watch, but haven’t got round to seeing. For feeding, breast or bottle, get comfy, get a drink, a snack and grab the remote as you could be sat in that chair for a while.

8. Survival Box. Cleaning caddies are really good for this as they are really convenient for moving from room to room and keeping things together that you might need. We still use ours now. We have a stash of nappies, wipes, creams, hand sanitiser, baby scissors, scratch mitts etc. It could be for drinks, snacks, your favourite book and any other goodies Mum might need.

9. Trust your Instincts. As you and your baby get to know each other, your instincts will start to tune into your babies cues. Responding to your babies cries, will help you learn what they are trying to tell you. Before long you’ll know their tired cry from their hungry cry.

10. Remember Nothing Lasts Forever. Whether in the early days, when teething starts or when they have toddler tantrums, remember nothing lasts for ever. Your baby is going to go through many phases and present you with lots of different challenges along the way. Those challenges will become insignificant against all the milestones you’ll encounter. Capture those moments, as those are the things you’ll look back on, not the sleepless nights or the dirty nappies.

11. A Camera. Always have one to hand to capture those moments mentioned above.

12. Go to the Hairdresser. Planning a trip to the salon is easier said than done when baby arrives. Get some help to look after baby and pamper yourself for a few hours. It will make you feel human again!

13. Mother and Baby Groups. Great for getting out of the house and making new friends. Find your local groups online, and email the organiser to let them know you’ll be coming. You’ll know a friendly face will be expecting you so it’s not quite so daunting the first time round.

14. Help . If it’s on offer, take it! Every little helps from a casserole from a neighbour to the Mother-in-Law taking baby for walk while you have a rest.

15. Enjoy you Baby! Last, but by no means least, enjoy every moment with your new bundle of joy. Don’t worry that the washing up hasn’t been done, think about the cuddles you’ll be missing out on if you do the washing up. You won’t get this time back, so make the most of it. The Mother-in-Law can do the washing up 😉
