I don’t know if you’re like me, but I rely on the internet for pretty much everything I do these days. If you take a moment to think about all of the online accounts and sites that you have, you’ll soon realise you have an account for almost every area of your life, from your bank account and social networks, to online shopping, blogs (lots of blogs!) and calendars.

We outsource so much of our life to our online accounts, from arranging a meet up after work, to paying for the flowers for Mother’s Day, but we sometimes forget about the importance of being safe online. While at work we usually have people who will ask the questions like “what is file integrity monitoring” for us, keeping our systems safe and protected and monitored all the while. However, when at home we often slack on our own safety and security.

If someone were able to get into your computer and get hold of your passwords and other important information, they could easily do a lot of damage in a very short space of time. If this has ever happened to you, you’ll know how quickly an account can be emptied or a card can be spent on. Fortunately there are lots of things we can do to protect ourselves so we don’t have to worry about it. Here are some top tips for remaining safe when you are online.

Are you safe online?

Have A Secure Password

Many people think that as long as they don’t share their passwords then all of their information is safe and that no one has a chance of guessing what their password might be. However, people with only minimal knowledge of you could easily guess your password if it is some variation on your birthday, mother’s maiden name, favourite band and so on.

A determined hacker will be able to crack even more complicated passwords, and if you use your passwords across your various online accounts they could have access to your whole life in seconds. When you are coming up with a password, try something like Microsoft’s password checking tool to be sure that it is secure.

Keep Your Social Networks Private

So many people share their whole lives on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks these days, but don’t realise how much of their information can be seen by people that they don’t even know.

It’s really worth going through your social networks and checking the privacy settings, ensuring that as much as possible is set to friends only, and that you only ever add people, or allow people to follow you, if you actually know and trust them. You can also add another layer of protection by using such products as a NordVPN to keep you as safe as possible online through walls of cybersecurity.

Use Secure Networks

Whenever you log onto any page or account, make sure that you are using a secure network that you trust. There are lots of free wifi networks floating around that will allow you to access the internet when you are out and about, but these networks may also be able to gather information about you simply because you are connected to their network.

If you inadvertently connect to a hacker’s network then you may be giving away your most valuable information, it really doesn’t bare thinking about does it. A great way to protect yourself is to ensure you have a reliable anti-virus software.

  1. Microsoft’s password checking tool is something that I need to check out! And your’e right I used to share much more on my Facebook and Twitter but then I felt like there’s no privacy and people seemed to know everything about my life, I now only post once in a while and I’m more careful using social media sites 🙂
