Last night I lost myself in beautiful pictures and videos of places to visit in the Indian Ocean.  Every single island was stunning and had something very different to offer anyone wanting to travel there.

The Most Beautiful Destinations In The Indian OceanWhy Visit The Indian Ocean

The blue waters and perfect white sand beaches make for the idyllic luxury holiday. Whether you are seeking a relaxing break, a honeymoon or perhaps something more active the Indian Ocean has it all.  I’ve picked out the most beautiful destinations the Indian Ocean has to offer, and why you should visit there for your next ‘once in a lifetime’ trip.  They have all made it onto my travel bucket list, and here’s why.

Indian Ocean Sri-Lanka

Sri Lanka prides itself on being the most popular tourist destination in the Indian Ocean.  This colourful, diverse and sometimes chaotic island certainly has a lot to offer it’s visitors. It’s a great destination for families too, and if you don’t believe me take a look at the TraveLynn Family Travel blog for who to enjoy this destination with kids.

Sri Lanka

It’s a destination steeped in history and culture.  It began it’s journey as the centre of Buddhist education and civilisation and promises breathtaking ruins of great spiritual significance.

No visit to Sri Lanka would be complete without spending sometime seeing the elephants in their natural habitat.  Sadly, the Sri Lankan elephant is now an endangered species but those that remain can be seen in one of the country’s national parks.

The Maldives

When you visit the Maldives you step into a tropical island paradise.  It is the perfect destination for exploring the Indian Ocean’s rich and exotic marine life.  The Maldives  is made up of 1190 low lying coral islands making it perfect for diving and snorkelling.

Whilst you spend your days diving in these crystal clear blue waters, you can also enjoy some of the best holiday accommodation in the Indian Ocean.

When it’s all got a bit too much you can retreat to the palm trees.   They offer the perfect resting places on some of the most stunning and unspoilt beaches in the world.

You can also eat dinner with the fish at the world’s first underwater restaurant in the Maldives.  That will be one romantic experience she won’t forget in a hurry!

The Maldives is the perfect luxury destination for anyone wanting to enjoy a tropical paradise both on land and under the sea.  It’s the natural choice for a relaxing break.

Mauritius

Mauritius is an island that has been influenced by several cultures over it’s history.  If you visit here you will find hints of African, Indian, Chinese, French and even British influences making this a unique holiday destination in the Indian Ocean.

It promises travellers some spectacular countryside and lots to explore including the phenomenon that is the Seven Colours Of The Earth.  These sand dunes, where volcanic dust settles are one of the islands most popular tourist attractions.

Mauritius is also home to some amazing waterfalls including Rochester falls, Tamarin and Chamarel which is the highest known to be in the world.

Mauritius is also an amazing place to go on safari, but with a difference.  You can take a segway or a quad to explore the wildlife here, and have a lot of fun at the same time!  What a perfect way to see a rhino.

The Seychelles

I could not talk about the most beautiful places to visit in the Indian Ocean without mentioning the Seychelles.  They are made up of 115 islands and offer the perfect romantic holiday for couples.

seychelles The Seychelles have been described as heaven on earth because of their natural beauty.  They are also thought to give home to the Garden Of Eden on the island of Praslin.  Whether or not this is true the islands are still the most popular romantic getaway in the Indian Ocean.  The Seychelles combine both leisure and luxury in perfect measure for the ultimate getaway experience.

Whether you are after a romantic break or a once in a lifetime experience Wexas offer great holiday packages for visiting the Indian Ocean.  The first destination of my list will be Sri Lanka.  Where are you thinking about visiting?

  6. I worked as the Indian Ocean Travel Specialist for Abercrombie and Kent prior to setting up as a travel blogger. It was an absolute delight to sell holidays to Mauritius, the Seychelles and Maldives – the region, as you have said above Zena, is absolutely stunning. I can also thoroughly recommend Sri Lanka, the highlight of my visit was Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which was incredible:) Great post Zena
