As we get closer to spring, I’m starting to think about how to make the garden fun for kids to play in. I know some people like the idea of having a swimming pool in their garden and that’s fine if that’s something you want. You could even take a look at using someone like Willsha Pools to help you design it. But I think this summer the garden will really come into it’s own as both our girls enjoy being outside. I really want to make the garden a place they can enjoy playing together so I’m getting my plans ready. A friend recommended that I take a look at using someone like Legion Landscaping to help me get my garden organised for them. But I decided to do it myself. I’m not much of a gardener, but I think there are some simple things I can do to make the garden a lovely outdoor play space for them both to enjoy. I didn’t want them to complain when they came in saying, “Mum, I’m muddy!” so, I had been exploring the possibilities looking into artificial grass in Perth for a material that’s as realistic as possible!

5 ways to make your garden fun for kids

Little Pudding was crawling last summer, so we didn’t use the garden as much as I would have liked too. I find the crawling stage really difficult as a parent when they are on their hands and knees but are really mobile with it. It doesn’t matter how many picnic rugs you put out, they will not stay on them and they are determined to eat anything they can pick up, including dirt and worms! This year, the children will both be on their feet and enjoy playing together a lot more. Having watched our 3-year-old play in the garden, these are the things I know will make the garden fun for kids. Making the garden look good is important too as we want the children to have a nice place to play, so it may be wise to look into something similar to Waukesha Seeding Services as well as other companies to check out what they can do for us.

Get A Play House

One day I was walking back from the farmer’s market, and one of the houses I passed was having a yard sale. They were getting rid of the garden toys their children had outgrown. I spotted the play house and went to haggle a bargain. My husband and son were delighted when I got home and told them they had to go up the road and collect it. It was money well spent though as the children love having a little house to play in. It’s great for imaginative and role play games. You can even hide your teenage brother in it!

Grow Some Flowers

child looking at flowersI really want to increase the flowers we have in the garden this year. The children love exploring flowers and I think it brings a really sensory aspect to any garden space. I’ve planted some buddleia as they are easy to grow and attract butterflies which I know the girls will love. I want to grow some lavender as it smells gorgeous and we are all big fans of daffodils. They are so bright and cheerful.

Make The Garden Fun For Kids & Get A Trampoline

My son had a trampoline when he was younger, and it was his favourite outdoor toy. They are an important addition to any child’s garden these days. They are great fun and are great for exercise too. Children will jump for hours. Not all gardens are made for big trampolines, so if you are short on space, how about one of these instead? As long as children can jump, they seem to be happy!

Get Them Involved In The Garden

Children love dirt don’t they? They also love planting and growing things. We have lots of seeds that we got from the BBC Garden Show last year and I want to encourage the girls to plant them themselves. We will be getting them some gardening toys to help get them involved. When it comes to making the garden look nice, if they are apart of it, they are going to enjoy using it a whole lot more.

Add Some Toys And Games They Can Play With In The Garden

Toys are a really important part of child’s play, and you can add a few things to the garden to make it really fun. It doesn’t need to be very much. We have balls, skittles and ride on toys that the girls like to have fun with. They also love bubbles, so we always have plenty in the house in the summer and they would literally chase them all day.

  1. Aw this is such a fab post. I always used to love planting and growing things as a child, I still do now and with my siblings, we still have a ‘who can grow the biggest sunflower’ contest x

  2. This is a great list. We have a trampoline and playhouse. Another good one is a water and sand table. My daughter loves to do gardening with her dad x

  3. Not a huge fan of trampolines (dangerous, disruptive to the neighbours etc) BUT..that’s because both of my neighbours children have them in theirs and they’re on them until 1am, even in winter! So I’m a grumpy neighbour and not a fan.

I definitely think growing things in the garden with the kids is a good idea.
I often get my nephews to plan potatoes/onions/garlic, they love seeing things grow and then picking them in the summer 🙂

  4. This year I’ve *finally* got my own garden office sorted so the boys little playhouse will be cleared of all my work stuff and they’ll have a little den of their own to play in!! I can’t wait!! And neither can they! 😉

  5. Fabulous List ! I like all the ideas but my favorite is the Play house . It reminded me of tree house and also definitely keep them engaged for couple of hours.

  6. There are some brilliant ideas here! You are so lucky. We don’t have a garden. Just a little courtyard. However, I’m going to buy some “fake grass” this year and put that down to make it more of a garden
