I sit here writing this post just after we’ve just spent a fabulous week exploring the beautiful county of Cornwall during the half term break. The idea of a road trip is something that really excites me. The thought of open roads, amazing scenery and the ability to travel wherever you want are just a few of the reasons why I love it so much. The kids really enjoy the sense of adventure too.

There’s no doubt about it that a road trip can be extremely rewarding but you need to have a thorough plan ready and be prepared. The idea of just hitting the road without any idea of where you’re going doesn’t sound as appealing to me. I like planning ahead so I know we’ve included everything we want to see and do and also to avoid any hidden surprises en route.

For the trip to run as smoothly as possible your vehicle needs to be ready for the long journey ahead. Some of the best UK road trips take you on some uneven surfaces and your car needs to be properly equipped. As well as the obvious checks and tests that need to be carried out before you set off, tyres are one of the most important factors that need to be considered. Making sure your tyres are in good condition and correctly inflated means that you don’t have any added worries that your vehicle will struggle during the journey. If you’re concerned about the health of your tyres and feel they need replacing, companies like TyrePlus stock a wide range of tyres, giving you the reassurance that the road trip will run as smoothly as possible.

The UK is home to some breathtaking road trips that explore some hidden, beautiful areas within our country. I thought I’d share with you some of the trips that have caught my eye and that I’d love to drive.

The Atlantic Highway, England

If you haven’t been to Cornwall before then I definitely recommend you do and The Atlantic Highway lets you explore some of the county’s most popular driving spots.

The first part of the journey takes you through the picturesque Exmoor National Park; if you’re lucky enough you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the resident red deer.

Along the way there are several quaint villages that offer a taste of true British culture, tea and scones, making for the perfect pit stop. The final stretch of the journey is what makes this trip so special. As the roads take you further south you start to descend towards the finishing point of Land’s End. En route you’ll pass through Somerset, Devon, and Newquay, all home to some amazing sea views and lush beaches that are sure to finish your road trip off in style.

Abergwesyn Pass, Wales

It’s safe to say that this route is more for the thrill-seekers but the natural Welsh scenery more than makes up for it.

Starting in the village of Tregaron this road trip offers around 20 miles of winding roads, endless views and plenty of panoramic photo opportunities.

During the first part of the journey you’ll be surrounded by majestic hedges that can feel quite intimidating. Once the first part is over the road opens up and the views are simply breathtaking.

Venturing through the Cambrian Mountains, this really is a road trip packed with beautiful views and true Welsh countryside. Be warned that some of the roads are fairly uneven, reiterating why you need tyres that can tackle the journey ahead.

Causeway Coastal Route, Ireland

Belfast and Dublin are usually the go to places in Ireland and Northern Ireland but this trip allows you to fully appreciate the other areas this country has to offer.

In order to fully enjoy the route, it’s best starting in Belfast. The route takes you right along the northern coast of the country passing some of Ireland’s most beautiful destinations. Along the way there are endless photo opportunities and the chance to explore this amazing country.

Torr Head, The Gobbins and the famous Giant’s Causeway are just some of the memorable places you can experience. For the whisky lovers, feel free to stop off at the Old Bushmills Distillery and find out how some of the finest Irish whisky’s are made and how they’ve evolved over the years.

The UK is home to a huge amount of road trips that are waiting to be discovered. We all love to explore different towns and cities so why not enjoy them by road?

  1. We’re huge fans of road trips after a long one in America last year. In fact I’m taking our Don to Ireland over Easter on one and you’ve reminded me to do a thorough check on the hire car I get!

  2. These look fantastic. I would love to drive the Causeway Coastal route. You’re right too, the UK is home to some beautiful scenery. 🙂
