Green Eyed Toddler – GET

Have you seen the Green Eyed Toddler recently?  AKA GET, he can be a feisty little monkey when he wants to be, and strong clear boundaries are required from Adults to improve his behaviour.

You’ll often be minding your own business, doing your own thing and GET stops being his usual friendly, playful self.  Things have probably been going really well for your lately, you’ve got new job, started a family maybe.

GET suddenly realises you’ve got more toys than him!  Instead of being happy about coming to your party, GET takes your new toy and smacks you over the head with it.  Ouch!  Didn’t see that coming!  This is a clear sign that GET’s nose has been well and truly put out of joint.

GET will probably go off and play in the ball pit now.  He used to love it when you came and played hide and seek with him.  At this point it’s probably best to let GET get on with it.  Any attempts to try and get him to play nice are going to be ignored.  Your too big to go in the ball pit now anyway, it’s probably worth finding something else to do.

GET will emerge from the ball pit eventually, probably screaming ‘I’m not talking to you anymore!’.  There will be some foot stomping and exaggerated folding of arms, accompanied by a lot of huffing and puffing. This is GET speak for ‘Look, I’m still punishing you for having better toys than me!’.

As we all know, GET can be very manipulative and incredibly resourceful.  If GET is feeling well and truly displaced or resentful they will try and get all the other nursery kids to come and join his gang. Don’t worry too much about this as most of the kids will carry on doing their own thing.

At some point GET will probably have a bit of a tantrum, or quite a lot of a tantrum, who knows!  It could be worth reasoning with GET. They might calm down and start playing nice again, it’s always worth a try.  Sometimes GET’s tantrums can go on a while. It’s probably best to leave the room and put the kettle on at this point. When GET starts to behave himself again reward him by sharing your toys.  Be prepared though, GET might keep throwing toys around, it might be worth not asking him to play for a while!

Seriously ‘tounge in cheek’ post from Zena’s Suitcase
