Should you take your dog on holiday?

Of course you should! They are part of the family, right?

We have 2 young dogs now, and we’ve taken them on holiday with us a couple of times.

I thought taking a dog on holiday would be hard work, but honestly it isn’t.

Having your dog with you while on holiday can bring such a joy to the trip. Having discovered what fun taking a dog on holiday can be, I wanted to share 5 reasons why you shouldn’t delay planning a holiday with dogs.

You Will Miss Them

Sometimes it’s simply not possible to take a dog on holiday with you, and when that happens, you will both miss each other terribly.

For you, your furry companion isn’t by your side, leaving a sad and empty feeling.

Your dog will also be very sad without you, no matter how well cared for they are while you are away.

Your Dog is Happier with You

If you are at all worried about taking your dog to a new place, and how they might react, please don’t.

Your dog is happiest while they are with you, and is you have a good relationship, they will cope well with the change in surroundings.

Dogs Never Say No

Your dog will make a great holiday companion because they are always up for going out.

They love a trip to the beach or walking in the woods.

They can enjoy visiting lots of dog friendly places with you, and that includes eating out too.

New Experiences

Your dog will thank you for taking them to different places and sharing new experiences with them.

The new sights, sounds and smells will make your dog very happy indeed.

It also allows you to practice your training skills with your dog in new environments, which will be a huge benefit for both of you.

It will be easier than you think

Going on holiday takes planning and organising, and incorporating your dog into those plans is much easier than you think.

Having taken long journeys with dogs a few times, it really isn’t much different to planning any other kind of road trip.

For travelling they need to be comfortable, have snacks and water, and be able to get out of the car for a break every few hours.

For the holiday, they will need their bed, blankets, food, bowls, leads, poop bags etc. Compared to us humans, they travel light in comparison!

Once you are on holiday, it’s just about carving a little routine where they get their needs met around walks and playtime, so that you can enjoy visits to the local sights and relax in a cafe or restaurant after a busy day.

That seems like a fair trade, doesn’t it?

  1. We only have kitties and they don’t care to come! But I can see why a dog might. However, it could make things complicated at times but I know most people do bring their dogs while traveling.

  2. We have a cat instead, but I think the same points still apply. That or at least have someone at home(or daycare), so your pet has a fun time too.

  3. I don’t have any dogs, but I think this is a great idea. I would never want to leave my animals behind. I think it’s nice to travel with pets.

  4. My son always take his dog with us everytime we go on a vacation and we ak had wonderful memories together

  5. My dog would love to go on a road trip. He loves to take car rides and has for a long time. I’m not so sure how my bigger dog would do. Probably just fine, but I’d be more afraid of her having an accident than my Yorkie.

  6. I know a lot of people travel with their dogs. Ours has too much anxiety and does much better with the sitter.

  7. Wellllll, I wouldn’t exactly say that dogs neeeeverrr say no, some don’t travel very well and do better to stay with friends and family but barring that it’s always great to include the whole family during a holiday!
