Food + Restaurant Reviews

We love the opportunity to pop into town, so when we were invited to review Red Dog Saloon restaurant in Nottingham I knew we couldn’t say no.  Finding good places for family dining is important to us, so we went along one Sunday with the girls to check out the restaurant. Red Dog Saloon is in a great location on Victoria Street where the Lace Market meets Hockley in Nottingham’s city centre.  It’s a stones throw from the Lace Market tram stop and there’s also a bus stop just down

When I travel to London with kids I know that at some point we are all going to need a little pick me up.  On my recent trip with Indie I new the perfect place for us to go.  I booked us a table for a visit to Choccywoccydoodah in Seven Dials, near Covent Garden as I thought it would make for a lovely pitstop for us both.  It is the most famous chocolate cafe London has to offer after all. We had been up very early that morning so I

There are lots of places to eat in Nottingham but if you really like steak you might want to check out Bar + Block on Chapel Bar near Maid Marion Way.  Seeing as it only opened a few months ago, it’s still considered to be one of the new restaurants in Nottingham so we were keen to go and take a look.  The invitation also coincided perfectly with our wedding anniversary, so it came as a welcome treat for us too. We arrived at Bar + Block on one of

Hello readers! Thanks so much for stopping by once again.  If you are new here, a huge welcome to you as well and I really hope you enjoy what you find here on Zena’s Suitcase blog. I guess you might have stumbled across this post if you are looking for places to eat in Exeter with kids?  That’s great news as I have a super family friendly cafe I think that you will love! We visited the Board Cafe in Exeter recently and here’s what we thought of our visit.

Do you order organic fruit and vegetables from Riverford?  Did you know that they have a restaurant in Devon, called the Riverford Field Kitchen?  If it’s a restaurant you are interested in then read on to find out about our delicious family Sunday dinner and our Riverford farm tour.   We met the Head Gardener Penny Hemming at Riverford Field Kitchen to begin our tour, which started with a peek inside the Riverford Field Kitchen poly tunnel.  I was really excited about this tour as I feel so strongly about children

Our week in Cornwall really brought it home to me that great holiday vibes are right on our doorstep and there are a few things that make a trip in the UK very special indeed.  One box we certainly have to tick when travelling with the kids is looking for the best fish and chips.  While we were in Cornwall we were invited to Harbour Lights Falmouth to check out their fish and chip restaurant. We had very much enjoyed a morning exploring the National Maritime Museum, but the kids

If you want breathtaking views and an exceptional dining experience I strongly recommend that you book a table at Lewinnick Lodge during your next Cornwall holiday.  As restaurants in Newquay goes it’s probably one of the best and will tick all the right boxes if you want a special treat or have an occasion to celebrate during your trip. That’s a pretty bold opening statement but that’s how impressed we were with both the food and the location of this restaurant and luxury bed and breakfast in Newquay.  I strongly

As well as being an incredibly beautiful county, Cornwall also prides itself on offering it’s visitors some exceptional family friendly dining experiences.  With local fish and seafood in abundance many restaurants are able to offer fresh daily specials as well as their well crafted regular menus.  With lots of bars and restaurants to choose from, finding places to eat in Cornwall can start to feel overwhelming so I want to share with you our experience of family dining at Sharksfin in Mevagissey during our recent Cornwall break. Cornwall is an

We wondered whether we were being led down a rabbit hole when google maps pointed us in the direction of a rather unassuming street in Mayfair in search of Mr Fogg’s Residence.  This was to be the last stop for our theatre weekend in London and we certainly wanted to end on a high note. We waited patiently with the other guests outside Mr Fogg’s Residence for the clock to strike 3.01pm.  There was definitely a buzz in the air, as we all waited eagerly to find out what was inside.

Going out for dinner is without a doubt one of my favourite things to do, so it simply had to feature during our recent theatre weekend in London.  My sister and I were very excited to be invited to Shikumen in Aldgate to sample their highly acclaimed Chinese food on Saturday evening.  The Shikumen  restaurant is about a 10 minute walk from Tower Pier so I would strongly recommend taking a trip down the Thames with City Cruises to get there.  We caught the boat just as it was getting

What makes for a memorable restaurant in your book?  Is it a warm and friendly welcome?  Perhaps it’s the comfortable dining experience?  I’m pretty sure an excellent menu and high quality dishes will feature in your list somewhere, right? Well, if you are looking for an Indian restaurant in Nottingham that has all these bases covered then let me introducing you to The Calcutta Club on Maid Marian Way, also known as the ‘Madras Mile’. My husband and I enjoyed a rare night out in Nottingham to find out more

I am very aware that the spaghetti bolognese that I cook at home is nothing like the authentic Italian pasta that I’d experience in a five star restaurant but for a family meal it ticks our boxes especially on a school night.  However, sometimes it’s nice to ditch the family meal and have a real treat, and this is where Pasta Evangelists come in.  Do you want to hear more? The Pasta Evangelists team reached out to me on Twitter and asked me if I would try out their fresh

Hands up if you love ordering takeaway? I know we love to have takeaway every now and again with Chinese and pizza being right up there as our favourite online food orders. We go to our takeaway app and place a an order without much thought to how we are spending our money until now. I was recently introduced to a food ordering and table reservation service called and they have completely changed how I order takeaway food or book a table at a restaurant. I want to be

We’d already had an exciting day in London with a wonderfully English afternoon tea followed by a stroll along the Southbank with some blogging friends.  Our day was not yet over, and we headed back to our apartment in Fulham Broadway to get ready for our dinner reservation at the Mango Tree London. Time wasn’t on our side so we booked an Uber to ensure we arrived at the restaurant on time.  The two of us enjoyed being driven through the city’s streets at night, chatting about the days’ events

Edinburgh – known as ‘the Athens of the North’ and it’s one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. The New Town is full of stunning neoclassical architecture and the dramatic volcano-perched castle provides a picture postcard appeal that’s uniquely charming. You’ll never run short of cultural or historic attractions in Scotland’s capital — but it’s also home to vibrant restaurants that tingle the taste buds of trendy locals and visitors alike. Book a table at one of these four spots to dine in style in Edinburgh and you’ll be licking your

I love afternoon tea.  It’s the perfect way to spend time with friends, celebrate a special occasion or just treat yourself to a little decadent luxury.  I visit local cafes with friends and family regularly, but there is something very extra special about going to The Waldorf Hilton Hotel for afternoon tea that leaves the rest behind. Myself, and a group of my favourite bloggers were invited to The Waldorf to start our Britmums Live weekend with them.  It certainly got things off on the right foot and you can

I personally love Wagamama, and I really want my kids to love it too.  The food is always fresh, healthy and super tasty and I think it’s a great place for kids to experience Japanese food.  Wagamama is a great restaurant for kids with it’s bench style eating experience and child friendly chop sticks, but what did my daughter make of it all on our recent visit to Wagamama in Bath. We were both very hungry when we arrived at Wagamama after our day exploring the city of Bath together,

Our arrival in Bath was a little bit stressful to say the least. I was not at all prepared for the restrictive one way system and lack of parking in the city following our drive from Dartmoor.  Once we’d checked in at our hotel we booked an Uber and headed straight to Jamie’s Italian.  There was something comforting about heading to a familiar restaurant and both my daughter and I were very much looking forward to dinner and some time to relax together after a busy day travelling. We were

Our holiday in Menorca left a big impression on us to be honest.  The main reason was because it gave us the perfect balance of fun, sight seeing and the option to visit some great local restaurants in Son Bou. We loved our stay at Royal Son Bou Family Club and we also enjoyed visiting different places in Menorca.  Because we were staying half board at Royal Son Bou Family Club, we were also able to enjoy eating out as well as at the hotel.  We found having the option to

When thinking about where to take the kids to eat, I am a huge fan of buffet style restaurants with good quality food and a wide selection of dishes.  We were recently invited to Cosmo Restaurant in Nottingham to try out their 5 star approach to the all you can eat buffet, and it definitely sounded right up our street. We headed into Nottingham on St George’s Day and caught the city in full swing of the celebrations.  We headed up to the restaurant and had a great window seat from

Birthdays aren’t complete unless you are having fun with family and friends.  It also helps if they feature pizza and prosecco.  I think the two go very well together and one of the best places to enjoy all of the above is in the relaxed atmosphere of a Pizza Express restaurant with the exciting new Spring menu. April always give rise to some special celebrations at Zena’s Suitcase, as I get to celebrate being one year older and my sister also celebrates her birthday around the same time too.  This year

Las Iguanas invited us to their restaurant in Nottingham this week to check out the new menus, including what’s on offer for kids.  Las Iguanas is a South American restaurant & bar that I used to visit before having the girls.  I hadn’t really thought about it being a family friendly restaurant to take kids to eat in until our visit on Sunday. The sun was shining and everyone was in a good mood so we took the girls into town.  We did a bit of shopping and played in the

We enjoy eating out as a family, and it always features on our list of things to do when we are on holiday.  During our weekend away visiting Warwick this was no exception and when we found out there was a Pizza Express just down the road from our hotel, it seemed like the perfect choice for eating out together.  We all love pizza, but there’s something about eating at Pizza Express that makes it feel like an extra special treat. I like restaurants that provide good quality food, a great

Have you ever had breakfast with Santa?  It’s not something we had done until very recently, but I think it’s about to become one of our family Christmas traditions.  Wyevale Garden Centres invited us to join them and Santa for some festive fun at their Leicester branch one Saturday morning this December.  The girls were so excited at the thought of having breakfast with Santa, that they put on their favourite costumes for the occasion. You have to dress up for Santa, don’t you? We were greeted by Santa’s elves,

Recently we went on a family road trip.  We were heading to Bluestone in Pembrokeshire, but experience has told me this is a long way to drive with two small children.  We planned an over night stay at Premier Inn Lewins Mead in Bristol and discovered there was a Brewers Fayre at the same site. When Brewers Fayre found out that we would be passing through, they very kindly invited us to try their restaurant at Lewins Mead in Bristol.  As you might already know, we’ve been to Brewers Fayre

Venice has a lot of restaurants, some are good and some are not so good.  On our recent short break to Venice food was quite a big feature.  We were exploring the city a lot, so we welcomed the chance to sit down and enjoy a meal together.  I have very high expectations of food when I’m on holiday, as it’s such a big part of the experience and local culture.  If the food is disappointing in some way, it effects my experience of the holiday all together. Don’t Eat On

We literally had a smashing time when we went to Pizza Express recently to try out their new autumn menu and celebrate Daddy’s birthday.  Not one, but 2 glasses hit the deck as one slipped out of my daughter’s hand at the beginning of the meal and Daddy took one off the table with his coat as we left.  To say we were slightly embarrassed was an understatement, but fortunately we had a very lovely and understanding waitress who dealt with it all without any fuss.  That’s what you need

When I start talking to people about how good a cruise holiday is, one of the first questions I get asked is ‘what is cruise food like?‘. It’s understandable really as food is a pretty major part of a holiday, well it is in our book.  If, like me, you like a week or two off from the cooking and deciding what to have for your family meals, trust me when I say you will not be disappointed with cruise food.

Jamie’s Italian heard that Kaz and I were going to be staying in London for Britmums Live and very kindly invited us to the restaurant in Angel to try out the Super Lunch menu.  Kaz had never been to Jamie’s Italian before so I was really looking forward to seeing what she thought of it.   I was also looking forward to the chance to catch up with her over a lovely meal before heading off to the Holiday Inn Fringe Party in Camden Town.
