Balancing Relaxation and Adventure Along Croatia’s Stunning Coastline

Are you planning a Mediterranean getaway with tweens and teens?

If you are, Croatia has a bit of everything you need to keep everyone in the family happy while making the most unforgettable memories.

With some advanced planning, you and the family can see as much of this incredible country as possible as easily as possible.

Croatian Island Hopping with Tweens and Teens: A 7-Day Itinerary

Making your dream Croatian holiday a reality with tweens or teens in tow is easier than you might think and 7 days is all you need to explore the main sights.

Head to Split (2 Days)

Aerial view of Split, Croatia, featuring Diocletian’s Palace and the vibrant harbor—ideal for a family holiday combining culture, history, and coastal fun

We highly recommend starting your trip by boarding a cruise to Split.

Once you arrive, explore Diocletian’s Palace (your teens will love the underground cellars!), stroll the Riva promenade and enjoy a beach day at Bačvice Beach, which is great for picigin, a fun local water game.

After all the excitement, take some time out at one of the many seaside cafés such as Caffe Bar Frank or take an easy sunset walk up Marjan Hill to enjoy the wonderful views over the city.

Enjoy a Day in Hvar (1 Day)

From Split, hop on an hour-long morning ferry to get to Hvar, a beautiful town known for its historic charm.

Take some time to see Hvar Town’s medieval fortress (which dates back to the 16th century), rent kayaks, or take a short boat ride to the Pakleni Islands for some snorkelling.

When you all need some rest and relaxation, we suggest visiting one of the pebbly beaches, such as Pokonji Dol, as they are great for some downtime after a day of exploring.

There’s no shortage of beautiful beach accommodation here either, so you won’t struggle to find a place for you and the family to stay for the night.

Airbnb is always a good place to start your accommodation search.

Top Tip: Make sure you book any ferry tickets in advance, especially between June and August, as they can sell out fast.

Explore Korčula (1 Day)

Aerial view of Korčula Old Town, Croatia, with its medieval architecture, scenic marina, and clear Adriatic waters—ideal for a family island-hopping adventure.

Korčula is a 1.5 to 2-hour ferry ride from Hvar and is where you want to be for some Mediterranean wine and food tasting – Korcula Explorer is a great site to book tours to enjoy these delicious local treats.

While you enjoy the fruits of the vineyards, your kids can take a cycling tour, or you can sign them up for a beginner-friendly windsurfing lesson to keep them entertained.

You also don’t want to miss the charming old town, nicknamed Little Dubrovnik, as well as Pržina Beach near Lumbarda during your visit.

Head to Mljet (1 Day)

Next on your Croatian family adventure is Mljet, which is another 1-hour ferry ride from Korčula.

You’ll get to spend time exploring the Mljet National Park as a family, which is truly stunning.

You can either bike around the saltwater lakes, visit the island monastery or rent kayaks for a calm paddle on the open water.

And don’t forget to take a swim in the peaceful Veliko and Malo Jezero lakes, which are surrounded by lush green forests.

End Your Trip in Dubrovnik (2 Days)

Aerial view of Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls perched above the Adriatic Sea—perfect for family holidays with historic walks, panoramic views, and coastal charm

A 2-hour ferry ride will take you to your final and much anticipated Croatian destination: Dubrovnik.

In this incredible city, you will get the chance to walk the famous city walls, which is a must-do with teens who love Instagram-worthy views.

You can also take the cable car up Mount Srđ and enjoy a Game of Thrones walking tour if they’re fans of the hit TV show.

Before you board your cruise back home, enjoy some downtime at Banje Beach or take a short boat ride to nearby Lokrum Island to enjoy the peaceful nature walks and colourful peacocks that live there.

Time to Set Sail

Croatia’s sparkling coastline offers the ultimate family escape, blending just the right amount of adventure, sightseeing and relaxation for tweens, teens and parents alike.

Whether you’re wandering ancient cities, diving into clear blue waters or simply soaking up the Mediterranean sun, every island brings its own Croatian magic.

With easy ferry connections and family-friendly cruises, island hopping has never been more exciting or more effortless.
