Hammonds furniture store recently surveyed 2,000 UK adults to find out the nation’s most picturesque places and then compared local house prices to find the best places to live.

They also looked at how many times the location had been tagged on Instagram and used all of this data to create a score out of 100.

So, what are the most picturesque locations in the UK?

Weymouth, Dorset

Scoring an impressive 85 on the Hammonds score chart, the charming seaside town of Weymouth in Dorset is the 5th most picturesque place to live with its sandy beach, stunning harbour and surrounding natural beauty making it a great place to live.

Whitby, Yorkshire

Whitby is famed for its dramatic beauty which even inspired Bram Stoker during his writing of Dracula (you will see evidence of this throughout the Yorkshire town). Whitby scored 87 and it is easy to see why when you look at the river dividing the town, the epic cliffs overlooking the sea, and the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey (a must-visit).

Portmeirion, Gwynedd

Wales has many fantastic locations in terms of natural beauty, but it was the small tourist village of Portmeirion in Gwynedd that was chosen with a score of 88 out of 100. Portmeirion has a distinctive Italian style with its own private peninsula allowing for mesmirising views. Homes here are also over £100K cheaper than the UK average, so it could be a good choice for someone looking to save money while still living in a picturesque location.

Dover, Kent

The most picturesque place to live with a score of 90 in Margate, Kent. Margate is a beautiful town with a sandy beach and an old-school feel to it, but it is also on the rise with a thriving art and food scene. As a result, Margate has been tagged in 959k posts on Instagram and is somewhere that many people are looking to move to.
