When it comes to hotel rooms, there are some things I do as a matter of course.

I like our hotel room to be tidy as it not only keeps our own things organised, but it also helps housekeeping keep the room clean during our stay.

I want our hotel room to be as clean and well presented as it can be. That’s one of the joys of staying in a hotel, isn’t it?

If hotel cleanliness is important to you, these tips are going to be perfect.

If you do these things during your stay you will enjoy a clean hotel room everyday. With very little effort at all, you can ensure housekeeping can focus on the job they need to do and you will have a beautifully clean and well-presented room to return to after a busy day sightseeing.

Unpack your Bags

One of the first jobs I do when I arrive in a hotel room is unpack our bags.

Not only does it make my life a lot easier, especially when travelling with the family, it also helps to keep the hotel room tidy and organised.

If everything is put away in the wardrobes, drawers and cupboards provided it is going to make cleaning the room so much easier for the hotel staff.

It also means large bags and suitcases can be put away so that floors are clear.

Little things like this make hoovering a hotel room floor a whole lot easier for daily housekeeping.

Pack away Dirty Clothes

No one wants the cleaners having to deal with their dirty clothes.

Leaving them on the floor, bed or furniture is going to get in the way of having your hotel room cleaned thoroughly.

The way I deal with dirty clothes is to pack them away in the suitcases as they are used.

Not only does this help with keeping the room tidy, but it also helps with packing to go home. If you pack all your dirty clothes away as you go, it will make getting ready to leave so much easier.

Follow any Hotel Room Instructions

When you get to your hotel room, look for any advice there is about how to deal with towels, bed linen etc. In many eco conscious hotels they will ask you to hang the towels in the bathroom if you are happy to reuse them.

Following any advice or instructions left in your hotel room will make your cleaners job so much easier.

Put Rubbish in the Bin

I know this might sound obvious to lots of you, but if you travel with children, you will get it.

I still have to remind my kids to put their rubbish in the bin, even when we are staying in hotels.

Before we leave the hotel room, I’ll spend a minute just checking that everything that needs to go in the bin is thrown away.

It helps keep the room tidy not only for us, but it means the cleaners can quickly and easily dispose of rubbish for us.

Anything that speeds up their daily tasks means a clean hotel room for us.

Keep Surfaces as Clear as Possible

Keeping things like bedside tables, desks and sinks clear in hotel rooms can be tricky, but it can be done.

If there are drawers, pop your belongings inside them so surfaces can be wiped easily.

Utilise any storage you have in the bathroom for your toiletries and toothbrushes.

A few minutes spent making sure as many surfaces are as clear as possible means a more thorough clean for your hotel room.

Sort Out any Breakages

Things break, it happens.

As a family with kids we understand this more than most.

If we do sadly break something, we would always clean it up and put it safely in the bin.

It’s not a great idea to leave something sharp and dangerous for anyone to deal with, even the hotel cleaners. If its glass, we pop it into a bag before it goes in the bin so the maids don’t deal with any nasty surprises.

Leave the Hotel Room

We like to keep any eye on the hotel cleaners so we know roughly when they will be cleaning the room each day.

We like having a clean hotel room and for the beds to be made, so we make sure we are out at some point during the day so that this can happen.

There have been occasions when we’ve returned to a room during cleaning, but we are more than happy to go and busy ourselves else where until it’s ready us.

What About Heavy Soiling?

There are some messes even the tidiest of people aren’t going to be able to deal with in a hotel room.

This might be the case if someone is unwell, as can often happen with children.

In this scenario, the best thing to do is alert housekeeping as soon as possible, who will arrange for a deep clean of the room for you.

If you have kept your room tidy and organised, and you end up in this situation, it will be a lot easier on you especially if you have to vacate the room.

It will make the hotel cleaners job a lot easier also!

Final Thoughts On Tidying Hotel Rooms

When it comes to how you should leave a hotel room, I’m of the opinion that cleaning and tidying are two different things. The hotel housekeeping service is there to clean the room for you, make the beds and change the linen.

Is it their job to tidy up your mess? I’m not sure it is.

Hotel cleaners are not paid very much and work very hard.

It is the courteous thing to do to leave the hotel room in a tidy condition so that they are able to do their job quickly and effectively.

The less time the cleaners have to spend picking up your rubbish and putting your clothes away, the more time they have to clean your room thoroughly and make it the very best it can be for your return.
