Are you going to be moving soon as you’ve recently been picked up a new job? Firstly, congratulations, that’s awesome news! Your resume must have really stood out to your new employers which is brilliant for you! Did you use a resume writing service? Apparently they are really good. It sounds like there are exciting times ahead. There’s a lot to sort out though, so let’s see if we can’t help things run smoothly for you to make the most of this big life change.

If you’re really lucky, then your new employer will pay for your move as well as help you get set up with a place to live, but unfortunately that’s rarely the case. Between hiring moving companies to hauling your stuff from point A to point B, dealing with finding a new place, and switching over your mail something that you should be celebrating can soon seem very overwhelming. If you are moving with kids, there’s even more to consider.

So whether you’re simply jetting over to the next town or moving abroad so that you can teach English in Thailand, here are a few tips to help you along with moving for work. If you follow these tips you can reduce your house moving stress and make sure you’re making the best possible choices in the limited time you have to get things organised.

Ask For Relocation Assistance

My first suggestion is to ask your new employer for some help with the move. It may not have been mentioned in your contract or as a part of your job offer, but it’s still worth asking for some advice at least. Your employer might be able to provide you with useful information about the cost of living in Houston or any other city or with listings for apartments in the area. They might also be able to provide you with some insight into where are good places to live in the new area. This local insight could be invaluable, and not so forthcoming from lettings agents and landlords.

Getting some advice on the cost of living can help tremendously so you can compare the salary or price per hour that you’ll be making against the standard rent payments, costs of utilities, and more. Every major city around the world will have a cost breakdown so that you can plan out what your expected monthly budget will be and it’s something really worth thinking about before you move home.

Sometimes your employer will go above and beyond their relocation policy, including paying for a moving company to haul your furniture and paying the deposit on your apartment, so that it’s all set to go when you arrive. Whatever your employer does, any help they provide can help to alleviate the stress of a long distance move and there’s definitely no harm in asking.

Find A Location Close To Work

Finding a place to live close to where you work is going to help make you feel far more comfortable in the city than you can imagine. When you first arrive in a new city it can often feel overwhelming, because we like to be in familiar surroundings. If you are moving to a big area it can take you years to truly learn your way around.

My friend recently moved to founders village castle rock in CO because she got a job at the local high school and she has been none stop talking about how easy her commute to work is. In the past she has been up to 90 minutes away from her work so she is glad that’s now only 15 minutes!

By finding a location close to your work you can start small and get used to a specific area and neighbourhood within the city, making it much easier for you to adjust to your new environment. You’ll get to know street names, lunch spots, and more before branching out. As I always mention, if you are moving to a new location that is closer to your work, it’s crucial that you find out who lives next door to any potential properties you’re looking at – to see if they have a criminal record.

On top of that, you can even ride a bike into work so you don’t have to deal with navigating the busy city streets while saving gas money at the same time.

Get To Know Your Environment Before You Move

Before you move, do what you can to learn about where you are going to live. This will help you to feel at ease in the new city you are moving to. You can do this by taking a few trips to the city to visit, whether these trips are vacation based or just to look at housing options, they will help you settle in no end.

If you do go there for a vacation, it can be a useful way to gage the culture of a city and what attracts people there in the first place. Are there famous museums in the city or gorgeous coastal beaches that people like to visit? Is there a famous park or green spaces where people enjoy walking?

Checking these places out before you move can bring you closer to the city because those sites are situated within the backbone of it. They might become places you enjoy spending your time as well. If you’re a sports fan, it can also be a great excuse to go out and catch some local teams in actions too!

Lastly, read up on local blogs about the city so you can see what events are on and what’s big news in the area. Is the city building an exciting new shopping precinct? Is there a local scandal you should know about? Knowing these things before you go can serve as great starting points for conversation when meeting new people.

Avoid The Long-Term

When you’re moving into a new place, don’t sign a big contract for a new home or apartment. Since you’re still somewhat unfamiliar with the area, it’s important that you aim for a one year lease instead of buying a house out in the suburbs. You don’t want to get tied into something and then find out it’s not for you.

You may love the new area you’re moving into now, but who knows, you may just find something else in a few months time that you’re dying to have. Take it slow and don’t rush this if you plan to be in the city for a long time. This can leave you much happier than if you were to wind up in a neighbourhood you don’t like or if you find a place where the grass is truly greener.

Build A Social Network

You don’t need to become Mark Zuckerberg when you move into a new city, but it would be wise to start building a new friendship group there. Moving to a big city, especially a place like New York City or Los Angeles can feel isolating, so it’s important to make some connections when you arrive.

A great way to make friends outside of work is to join classes in the city. Do you love to cook? Join a cooking class. Do you want to know more about history? Take a history class. The benefit of joining a class, whether at a college or just on offer from somewhere within the city, is that you are surrounded by like-minded people and soon start making new friends.

There are other ways to meet like-minded people in the city too. Use an app like Couchsurfing.com if you’re a massive traveler and invite a local out to coffee. This can be an incredibly efficient way to meet new friends. Do some research and see what else is out there that suits you.

Moving to a new area can be incredibly intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be because honestly, it’s a very exciting time! You get to go out and meet new people, you’ve got a new city at your fingertips, and new places to explore amongst other things. There’s very rarely a dull moment when you move into a new city so take advantage of it.

Just follow these tips and ask your employer about policies for helping you move, make sure you learn about the area before you arrive and find a place close to work (if you enjoy the area). Avoid commitments and be prepared to build a social network so that you can seamlessly fall into city life.
